TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The man charged in the fatal 2021 shooting of Terre Haute Police Detective Greg Ferency has filed a notice of “insanity defense.”
That’s according to federal court documents filed this month.
The judge has ordered Shane Meehan to receive a mental health examination to determine his sanity during the time of the offense charged in the indictment.
Once that examination is complete, clinicians will file their findings with the court, the defense council, and U.S. Attorneys.
Meehan was indicted by a grand jury in January of 2022 on several charges including murder of a federal officer. In addition to serving as a Terre Haute Police Detective, Ferency was also an FBI Task Force Officer.
