LOOGOOTEE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Several people turned out for a meeting Wednesday night in Loogootee concerning a proposed road project.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation the “Mid-States Corridor Project” would connect roads in Southern Indiana to Interstate 69. The project would run generally through Huntingburg then to the Jasper area and extend north through Martin County and eventually connect to Interstate 69.
Some of those in attendance at the meeting worry if the road is built they will have to sell their land to the state due to eminent domain laws. But others say it’s not too late to take action against the road.
“You don’t have to give up your farm, you don’t have to storm the courthouse with pitchforks and rakes. The answer is no,” Speaker Jason Mccoy said.
“We have a voice. If this road goes through and people leave, they leave farms that have been in their families for 200-300 years. Where are they going to go? They’re not going to stay in Indiana, they are going to leave,” Retired teacher and resident of Jasper Teresa Kendall said.
“We need to do something that’s going to benefit us and not just a few people. It’s got to work for all of us in the community and not private industry, private interests and stuff,” Mayor of Loogootee Brian Ader said.
Residents can visit Mid-States Corridor online to learn more about the preferred route as well as proposed variations. Project maps are also available as well as the option for leaving public comments.
