VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vincennes Police Department said that scammers are pretending to be officers to ask for money.
Sgt. Aaron Luce said that these callers are asking for donations for the department’s school resource officer program to get more officers into local schools.
Luce said he has seen many scams like this one in recent memory. He gave an example of how these callers deceive residents.
“We have people who call and identify themselves as police officers and they may call and say that they have a warrant for their arrest, and they need to pay such amount now to get it dropped or else they are going to come to their house and arrest them,” he said.
Luce said that this behavior is something that the department will never do.
“The Vincennes Police Department, or any police department, will not call and ask for money over the phone or not ask you for money at all in the first place,” he said.
Luce added that it is always important to check on the elderly and other people that may be susceptible to these calls.
“Some of them don’t have social media so they don’t see our alerts, so it is kind of hard to get the word out to them,” he said. “Make sure that you are checking on them and check their bank account for them.”
However, Luce said that there is a way to stop these callers in their tracks.
“We are able to take those numbers that call and trace those back to where the call came from and try and find out who is doing this and stealing money from people, their hard-earned money,” he said.
Luce said that if anyone suspects they have received a call in regard to this to call the department so they can report it as soon as possible.
