TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Thanks to the generosity of so many local residents, numerous Vigo County school children in need will have extra food for the summer.
WTWO teamed up with Toyota of Terre Haute for our annual Pack It Back for Summer event.
The program collects food donations from the community, and then packs that food into new backpacks that are then sent home with students in need for the summer break.
Thursday, staff from WTWO as well as our community partners gathered to stuff each of the 250 backpacks full of nutrition for the students.
Toyota of Terre Haute General Manager Bill Lutes said their company looks forward each year to helping make this program happen.
“We feel like its important to give back to the community, this is a very special event to us and we look forward to it every year,” Lutes said. “There are some needy individuals out there, and we enjoy doing this. We think its important to get involved in the community and give back to whoever we can.”
Toyota of Terre Haute is the title sponsor of the program, Steel Dynamics donated the backpacks used. The Vigo County School Corporation will then distribute the backpacks to students.
WTWO thanks everyone who donated to the food drive, as well as the community partner organizations involved including Toyota of Terre Haute, Culligan, Steel Dynamics, Covenant Cooperative, Dean’s Party Mania, Jimmy John’s, Baeslers, and Valley Professionals.
